airbnb

These days, Airbnb is one my favourite ways to find the very best accommodation when I travel. Sure, sometimes it’s nice to stay in a great hotel, but the disruptive and fast growing tech startup has made it super simple to find a massive variety of options and really get a taste for local living.

One thing’s for sure, and that’s you definitely won’t be short of choices. Recent statistics show that there are over 4 million listings on the platform, and 150 million people have signed up to sample a slightly different kind of travel.

Of course though, you do occasionally hear the horror stories. Maybe you know someone who’s stayed somewhere that turned out to be completely substandard, and so you’re feeling cautious about giving it a go. If so, you’re in the right place. It’s totally possible to find some real gems, and it’s just a case of knowing the process to follow.

Here are my secrets to finding a dream Airbnb stay…

Reach Out To Your Host And Ask Questions

A good Airbnb host is more than happy to answer any questions that you have before you book, so if there’s anything at all that you’re not certain of, do drop them a message and explain what you’d like some help with.

Remember too that your host is likely to be a fantastic source of knowledge on the area, and will be able to give you a real local perspective. They may be available to point you in the right direction of the lesser known restaurants, bars, and attractions that you might have otherwise missed out on.

Keep An Eye Out For The More Unique Listings

If you simply need a room for the night to get a bit of sleep before heading out to explore a new city, then you can certainly find plenty of options that will tick your boxes. With a little bit of digging though, you can find some really unique listings that offer a truly extraordinary experience.

Fancy staying in a treehouse? A log cabin? A train? Or even a castle? Dig around in the listings in your desired location, and you’ll be amazed at what you can find. If you’re reading this blog, it’s because you’ve got a keen interest in homes and interiors. With a bit of research and careful planning, Airbnb can definitely help you to stay in the kind of places that are right up your street!

Make Sure That You Read The Rules

Different hosts have different rules that you need to adhere by whilst you’re staying in their place, so make sure you check them in advance to make sure that they aren’t going to present any problems. Some listings might have curfews, for example, and if you plan to stay out late exploring, they might simply not work for you.

Similarly, some hosts might not accept pets, or state that you can’t invite friends over. If you’re in any doubt whatsoever, make sure that you ask the right questions before you place your booking.

Look For Hosts With Great Reviews

The fact that you can easily access reviews from other users is part of what makes Airbnb so great. We’ve all stayed in places before that don’t quite live up to their websites, and it’s so disappointing when you’ve been looking forward to a few nights away.

Generally speaking, the more reviews, the better. Find out what people are saying about the surroundings, the facilities, the host, and the location.

Consider What The Listing Misses Out

Sometimes, the things that aren’t mentioned or photographed in the listing can be very telling – and it can teach you more than what actually is included. If you’re renting out a full house but there are no pictures of the bedrooms, then you need to ask yourself why.

A great listing will have plenty of photographs, and go into detail about exactly what’s included and what you can find in the local area. If there’s a vague listing that you’re just not too sure about, then it’s probably wise to give it a wide berth.

Finding your dream Airbnb stay is very possible when you follow this advice. Are you planning your next trip at the moment? What kind of properties have made it to your shortlist?
